Holidays 2011 Opportunities
Meals at the Manger – Welcomes people to bring a can (or more!) to Christmas Eve services and put the items in a manger. It is a simple way to invite people to give to their neighbors to celebrate God’s gift of Jesus to the world. Act in Advent – Invites people to bring a different can of food during each of the four weeks of Advent. You can see an example of the bulletin insert attached and on the Micah’s Backpack website.

Special Advent or Thanksgiving Offering – Some churches have special services on Thanksgiving or during Advent. Consider taking up a special offering at one of the services to support Micah’s Backpack.
Give a Poinsettia and a Backpack – In many congregations, people give Poinsettias for Christmas Eve in memory or in honor of someone. Consider allowing people to give a Poinsettia or a Backpack in memory or in honor of someone. The partner congregations who have tried this approach have reported no decrease in the number of poinsettias they receive and a tremendous number of backpacks are given. Change for Change – During the month of December, invites people to donate loose change to help feed the students of Micah’s Backpack. Some partners have done this as a competition between groups in the congregation to see which group collects the most change.
Good Gifts– Some people prefer to make charitable gifts instead of purchasing holiday gifts. Consider making Micah’s Backpack information available so individuals can make donations.
