Who We Are

A backpack program that addresses food insecurity for youth in 10 local schools.

By partnering with 10 Blacksburg schools, Micah’s Backpack provides direct food assistance for students who are experiencing food insecurity.

Every Friday during the school year, the identified students receive a backpack filled with two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners, snacks, juice and milk boxes, and an educational piece. On Tuesday evenings volunteers from various academic, civic, and interfaith groups come together, building community, while packing the backpacks.

On Friday mornings volunteers deliver the bags and the partner schools distribute to the students. Currently, 300 children in Blacksburg schools receive a gift of healthy food during the academic year and approximately 140 during the summer school break.  By feeding this vulnerable population we demonstrate that their community cares about them.

How YOU Can Help!

Micah’s Backpack welcomes volunteers to pack and deliver backpacks on a weekly basis during the school year. On Thursdays we pack bags from 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm. Individuals or groups/clubs (who create their own rotating schedule of 2 volunteers ) gather to fill 200 gifts for children and youth in our community. On Fridays we deliver bags to 9 schools. Individuals may sign up to deliver bags between 9 am and noon to our partner schools.

Who Can Participate

Micah’s Backpack began working with families at Price’s Fork Elementary School in November 2008. Currently, Micah’s Backpack partners with all five elementary schools, middle school and high school in Blacksburg, the Head Start Preschool, and VICCC to provide backpacks to 280 students per week. Low income families should contact their school principal to find out if they qualify for the program. Program participation will be kept as confidential as possible. A parent or guardian must return a signed permission form for their child to participate. This form is available from their school principal.
